Arusha National Park is only one and half hours’ drive from Arusha to Mommela gate and 90 minutes’ drive from Moshi in Kilimanjaro Region. It takes approximately 40 minutes if flying from Kilimanjaro International airport. The park occupies an area of 552 square kilometers, with the highest elevation being Mount Meru at 4,566 meters above sea level. Mount Meru the 2nd highest mountain in Tanzania and the 5th highest free-standing mountain in Africa. The fresh water lake Longil and the alkaline lake Momella both attract birdlife and animals in plenty. A hike to the Tululusia Hill and Water fall offers the best view ‘of the park.
The dry season is from June to October and the wet seasons: the ‘long rains’ (March to May) and the ‘short rains’ (November to December) when migratory birds from Europe and North Africa are present and the local birds display their breeding plumage.
You can either choose to go for a game drive or walking safari accompanied by an armed ranger. The park is ideal for a day trip.
